Romance in Real Life: Bora Bora

15. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

When I imagine myself in Bora Bora, French Polynesia, my heart nearly aches with how romantic it feels, as if the island was designed for hopeless romantics like me. I picture arriving to the sight of Mount Otemanu, rising dramatically from the centre of the island, its emerald peaks wrapped in drifting clouds like a secret meant only for those who believe in love. The lagoon below glows in impossible shades of turquoise, already promising moments I know I’ll never forget.

In my daydream, I wake each morning in an overwater bungalow, the wooden deck hovering just above the crystal-clear lagoon. I imagine slipping into the water at sunrise, letting the calm surround me as the sky softens into pale pinks and golds. Somewhere in the distance, the gentle lap of the lagoon feels like a love song meant to be heard, not sung.

I picture drifting across the Bora Bora Lagoon on a quiet boat, stopping near the Coral Gardens where colourful fish move like living jewels beneath the surface. Floating there feels intimate and weightless, like love when it’s pure and uncomplicated. Later, I imagine walking barefoot along Matira Beach, the sand warm and soft, the sun sinking slowly into the horizon as if it doesn’t want to leave either.

As evening settles, romance deepens. I see myself sharing a candlelit dinner beneath the stars, the lagoon reflecting moonlight while Mount Otemanu stands watch in the distance. The air is warm, the world hushed, and every moment feels intentional. In Bora Bora, love feels expansive and serene; unrushed, untouched, and endlessly tender.

In my hopeless romantic imagination, Bora Bora isn’t just a destination; it’s a feeling. A place where the ocean, the sky, and the heart all seem to agree that love should be this gentle, this beautiful, and this endlessly blue.
