Istanbul – the only metropolis in the world to span two continents, and a bridge between civilizations, cultures and economies– recently launched a multi-faceted, wide-ranging international city festival focusing on culture and arts. Developed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Beyoglu Culture Route Project highlights Istanbul’s international value, and its historical, architectural, economic, and touristic assets. The Beyoglu Culture Route Festival takes place from October 30 to November 14, 2021, featuring the participation of more than one thousand artists across 60 locations. Serving as the capital for three empires due to its strategic position connecting Europe and Asia, Istanbul has brought together different religions, cultures, communities and their works throughout a rich history dating from the prehistoric era. Named a European Capital of Culture in 2010 by the Council of Europe, Istanbul now hosts an international city festival organized on the axis of Türkiye’s largest cultural and art project, the Beyoglu Culture Route. The Beyoglu Culture Route features the newly-rebuilt Atatürk Cultural Center, as well as the Galata Tower, Atlas Cinema, Galata Mevlevi Lodge, the Mehmet Akif Memorial House, and the Tarık Zafer Tunaya Culture Theatre, along with numerous other historical, cultural and architectural assets restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. These include important cultural and tourism investments such as Galataport, the Emek Cinema, and Garibaldi Stage. The route from the Atatürk Cultural Center to Galataport presents a revealing journey from the past to the future amid the captivating ambiance of Beyoglu, with architecture, literature, painting, music, design and theatre. The Beyoglu Culture Route Festival will be held annually to ensure that this project, designed to contribute to the brand value of Istanbul, one of the world’s most important tourism destinations, is showcased on an international level. Atatürk Cultural Center opens its doors Istanbul’s Atatürk Cultural Center reopened its doors to art lovers on October 29, 2021, the 98th anniversary of Turkish Republic Day. Known as Atatürk Kültür Merkezi (or AKM in short) by the locals, the newly-built contemporary structure references its former, iconic design. The AKM is one of the most important investments of the Beyoglu Culture Route, established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as Türkiye’s one of the largest arts and culture project to date. The Centre marks the start of the culture avenue, and its reopening launches the International Beyoglu Culture Route Festival, also developed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, inaugurated the Istanbul Atatürk Cultural Center in an opening ceremony attended by prominent figures from the business, arts and academic spheres, as well as representatives from non-governmental organizations, and local and foreign media outlets. Completely reconstructed in 2.5 years by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism at a cost of TL 2 billion, the AKM welcomes visitors throughout the year to a 49,000 square meters, 2,040-seat Opera House equipped with the state-of-art technology. The Center also features a 16,300 square meters, 802-seat Theatre Hall, the 410 square meter AKM Gallery and the AKM Multipurpose Hall. In addition to the aforementioned halls, the AKM offers an indoor area of approximately 100,000 square meters, consisting of a Gallery, a Multipurpose Hall, a Children’s Art Centre, a music platform, a music recording studio, and a library designed as an information centre for specialized topics such as music, art, architecture and design. The renewed complex also includes the AKM Yesilcam Cinema and spaces such as the Design Shop, along with rehearsal areas, soloist and orchestra study rooms, restaurants, a cafeteria, book cafés, workshops, and administrative and technical units. Türkiye’s Largest Arts and Culture Project Starting on October 30 and running through November 14, the Beyoğlu Culture Route Festival will feature concerts, exhibitions, and other events. Embracing all segments of society, exhibitions, concerts, opera and theatre productions, discussions and workshops will be held in sixty locations along the Festival route, with the participation of more than one thousand artists. As Türkiye’s largest arts and culture project, the Beyoglu Culture Route Festival brings together a wide array of works and disciplines, ranging from classical to contemporary arts, digital and film, music, dance and literature. Contemporary artists and university students are featured, along with collectors’ works and pieces produced for the Festival, gathering the nation’s cultural and artistic values under one roof. Quality food is made from quality ingredients and Chef Vicky Lau knows this well as her Michelin starred restaurant, Tate Dining Room, is known for its creative twists on Hong Kong’s seasonal products curated around Hong Kong’s culinary identity. Known for its fusion of Chinese-French cuisine and bridging the traditional with modern, owner and chef Vicky Lau is considered an icon in Hong Kong’s culinary scene. In the first episode of the four-part series, “Hong Kong Chefs’ Playbook” a collaborative effort by Hong Kong Tourism Board and Michelin Guide, Lau, together with host Debbie Wong, take us on a trip through Yau Ma Tei, the bustling historical district in the heart of West Kowloon. It is the perfect escape for every chef-at-heart as the pair guide viewers in discovering local hidden gems that stand as the backbone of many chefs and restaurants in Yau Ma Tei. Before we get to cooking, we first need the essentials. Dubbed as a cook’s paradise, Shanghai Street is swamped with stores brimming with pots, pans, and almost anything one might need in a kitchen. Known for its quality and affordable price points, this street is heaven for anyone that loves to cook. Walking along the street, you’ll find shops dedicated to equipment for different kinds of food. From all-wooden utensils to stainless steel equipment, there’s a store for every cook, be it a dim sum master or a pastry chef. Shops also house top-of-the-line gadgets for mixing, blending, frying, and other machines you want in a kitchen or restaurant. Man Kee Choping Board best known for their sliced-up tree trunk chopping boards A key destination for every chef on a trip to Shanghai Street is Man Kee Chopping Board. The establishment has been around for over half a century, offering quality and custom-made chopping boards made from a variety of woods to suit the needs of any cook. The wood acts as a sponge absorbing each hit of the knife, making it safe and ideal for chefs that do a lot of chopping. Owner Mike Au shares tips on the proper maintenance of the wooden boards, gifting one to Chef Vicky which she could use at her restaurant. Such wooden chopping boards aren’t as popular as they used to be, so Man Kee’s is truly a hidden gem for those who still appreciate the benefits of a good block of wood for their cooking. Now with all the right tools, it’s time to gather the ingredients. Not just a fruit market. The Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market is also a grade 2 historic building. Just a few minutes down the road from Shanghai Street is the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market. Established way back in 1913, the market was recognised as a Grade II Historic Building in 2009, and many of the buildings in the area --despite many additions and renovations, still retain their original facades from back in the day. To quote Chef Vicky, “if only the walls could talk”, as a trip to the market is like a trip back in time, with all the historical architecture and the Yau Ma Tei Theatre right across the street. The market is at its busiest during the early hours of the morning when fruits pass in and out of the market for delivery and is definitely the best place for a chef such as Vicky to find inspiration for her dishes. Speaking of inspiration, chefs also find this in the meals that they eat. After the trip to the market, Chef Vicky and Debbie take us to Lau’s go-to for claypot rice, and the restaurant she would always bring visiting friends to when in the country. For claypot rice perfection, Chef Vicky pours dark soy sauce around, in a circle On Temple Street lies restaurant Hing Kee Claypot Rice, home to over 60 variations of the comfort dish for over 40 years. Learn a little about the traditional comfort food from Chefs Vicky and Debbie before being treated to a front-row view of Chef Vicky’s skills at Tate Dining Room. Every chef has their own secrets to making their food taste the best. From ingredients sourced specifically from local markets to knives welded by the most talented craftsmen, the journey of one’s meal from its conception in a cook’s head to the plates on your table is a long and hearty one. West Kowloon has long been rich with the local life of the bustling communities of Yau Ma Tei and Jordan and are home to many historical architectures, time-tested stores and traditional craftsmanship, and the artistic lure of the WKCD. With this in mind, Hong Kong Tourism Board recently launched the West Kowloon neighbourhood promotion after featuring popular promotions “Old Town Central” and “Sham Shui Po – Every Bit Local” in the “Hong Kong Neighbourhoods” campaign. Join us as we take you on a journey through a district rich with art and culture existing as one. Five walking routes to uncover a rich heritage Starting from the beautiful shoreline at the WKCD, the West Kowloon neighbourhood programme extends to Yau Ma Tei and Pitt Street, and spans along Nathan Road to reach streets and paths around Austin Road, Jordan. To reflect the unique characteristics of each area, there are five thematic walking tours that has been devised to focus on Heritage & Craftmanship, Cultural Arts and Culinary Arts. The routes cover many little-known corners of the city that are often overlooked by residents and visitors alike, such as a bookstore hidden in the Tin Hau Temple, a seafood restaurant transformed into an art hotel, and a condiment store promoting western dishes fused with traditional fermented tofu. The routes offer recommendations for more than 50 points of interest, shops, and restaurants, and are available as an interactive e-map on the West Kowloon neighbourhood campaign page. Special offers have been arranged with shops and restaurants in the neighbourhood for people who take part in the walks to enjoy! Made by hand Momentos West Kowloon was also the stomping grounds for a lot of master craftsmen back in the day, some of which survive even now. One can turn a corner and still see elderly artisans working copperware with their hands and keeping forgotten crafts alive alongside convenience stores and luxury brand shops. Witness the masters at work at Lee Wo Steelyard, the last remaining shop in Hong Kong selling steelyards and Chinese scales or drop by the Cheung Shing Fans Factory on Shanghai Street that opened in the 1950s, selling sandalwood fans and incense on Shanghai Street for over half a century. Did you know that well-heeled, sandalwood fans were a status symbol for the upper class society back then? Discover Hong Kong’s intangible heritage through the alleys and hidden doorways of West Kowloon, and try your hand at these time-honoured crafts through the workshops hosted by the masters themselves. Urban Art in every nook, cranny and corner! Have your cameras ready when exploring West Kowloon because every part of it is worthy of a photo taken. If hunting for street art has you excited, you will want to immerse yourself in the artistic locales of West Kowloon and admire the different forms of art that have permeated its buildings - on them and within their walls. On the streets of this neighbourhood, explore the hallways of an urban gallery and learn to look up from, check under, and venture behind the mundane facade that makes up the modern humdrum of city living. Catch hard-to-find arthouse films at a community theatre, discover the murals splattered over metal shop shutters, stairwells, and concrete walls, and stop for a cup of tea in a boutique hotel that radiates creative energy. Your guide to Hong Kong’s West Kowloon How to get there: MTR: Exit from Kowloon Station (at Elements) from either Exit E4 or E5, head to Austin Station and take Exit E or West Kowloon Station at Exit G.

The Andean Mountains Known as one of the world’s longest mountain range, the Andes Mountain is part of several countries in South America namely Chile, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. Mount Aconcagua in Argentina takes the lead at the highest peak in the Andes with an elevation of 6,961 meters. The most recent climb achievement on this mountain besides establishing a world record was in year 2013. Paying a visit to this location will definitely be a day to remember! 5. Lake Titicaca, Peru Lake Titicaca is the second largest fresh water lake in South America situated between the border of Peru and Bolivia (the first is Lake Maracaibo if anyone was wondering). It is said that Lake Titicaca is one of the oldest lakes on earth and may be a million years old! 6. City of Valparaiso, Chile Valparaiso, a port city on the coast of Chile is iconic for its colorful cliff top homes that spanned for miles. Although the UNESCO World Heritage city of Valparaiso is not well known to the public, one would say it’s a best kept local secret as it is filled with history, gives one a chance to mingle with the locals and get to know the rich culture and heritage in depth. 7. Corcovado Mountain, Brazil Corcovado which translates to ‘hunchback’ in the Portuguese language is a quintessential mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Perched up on the peak of Mount Corcovado locates the widely recognized statue of Christ the Redeemer towering over the city of Rio de Janeiro. The statue which was completed back in 1931 stands at 30 meters tall and can be seen from anywhere in Rio de Janeiro which makes it one of the highlights of the city. 8. Perito Moreno Glacier The Perito Moreno Glacier located in Los Glaciares National Park spreads approximately 70 kilometers from El Calafate. It is one of the only few "living glaciers" in the world. To put it simply, it keeps a state of equilibrium where it grows in mass and breaks off keeping the size the same. A fun fact about this glacier is that it was named after explorer Francisco Moreno of the 19th century. The Perito Moreno Glacier is recognized as the most astonishing Argentinian natural wonders. Need we say more? 9. Atacama Desert If you’ve made it this far, many natural landscapes had been explored i.e. mountains, cities, lakes and glaciers but now yet another natural scape that has to offer the desert; Atacama Desert. The Atacama Desert is located in the northern region of Chile where her weather being driest in the day and plunging temperature by night. It boggles the mind how this attraction with so little inhabitance can be so intriguingly charming all at once. 10. Torres Del Paine National Park One of the notable parks in Chile would be Torres del Paine National Park. Not only is this park home to many species of animals and plants, its view is both stunning and picturesque scene will leave one mesmerized. Adventure junkies will be spoiled for choice at this destination laced with miles of snow-capped mountains in the distant, calm flowing rivers and waterfalls; not surprising the park was declared a UNESCO site since 1978. *** What’s left to do but check out the packages that Sedunia Travel has on South America. If you're looking for a destination where you can fully immerse yourself in the Kpop and Kdrama culture, appreciate the beautiful coast and explore mesmerising beaches, then Seoul, the capital city of South Korea is it. Many K-drama fans who have visited the city will affirm this statement - with countless backdrops paired with romantic scenes that will leave one feeling eager to explore more. But where does one begin? Let us give you a headstart with these hidden gems of Seoul. Gwangjang Market The Gwangjang Market located in the Jongno-gu district of Seoul was first established in 1905, making it one of the oldest and largest traditional markets in South Korea. Food bloggers and travel guides have written highly of this location, making this market a must for those on a gastronomic journey. Home to some 5,000 shops selling everything from clothing to a variety of foods, it is best to get here early and take half a day to thoroughly explore the plethora of items that are available. Seochon Village Seochon Village which directly translates to West Village is also located in the district of Jongno-gu. If you want to get a feel of the traditional Korean hanok stay, this will be the ideal place to be. Its many alleys are lined with hanoks (traditional Korea houses), taking you to ancient Seoul. Over the years, boutique shops, stunning cafes and art galleries have blended into the surroundings, making this location a great space for spend a leisurely afternoon. Sky Bridge Tour @ Lotte World Tower Standing at a height of 555m with 123-story, the Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in Seoul and is the fifth tallest building in the world. Thrill seekers can commence their journey by heading up to the 117th floor of the building. From here, they can climb an extra 7-story to reach the 123rd floor of the Sky Bridge Tour. Opened recently in 2017, the Sky Bridge Tour is the go-to place to get a 360-degree panoramic view of the breathtaking city of Seoul. An 11-metre bridge that connects to the identical building is not for the faint of heart but in our opinion the experience makes it all worthwhile. Naksan Park Open to the public 24-hours a day, Naksan Park is a great spot for visitors to get their morning exercise along the accessible exercise paths or just to observe the facet of the city transitioning from light to dark in the evenings. The ambience here will leave one feeling cool, calm and collected amidst serenity while being surrounded by Mother Nature. With numerous K-dramas previously filmed here paired with its dreamy backdrop, pose for a photo and reenact your favourite Kdrama scene. 10th Floor of the Express Bus Terminal You must be wondering… the 10th floor of the Express Bus Terminal in Seoul? What is there to see here? Only those who frequent the area would know the secret of this place in the building. Take the elevator up to the 10th floor to find a pleasant surprise awaiting you there. Not only does this floor house two Korean barbecue restaurants and a church but also opens up to a beautiful garden that surrounds the building. Although there are not many photos of this location available to the public, this is the exact reason why it falls under the hidden gems of Seoul category. This list merely touches the surface of the hidden gems that Seoul has awaiting for you when travel begins once more. There is so much to see, discover and explore in Seoul before expanding out to the rest of South Korea. We encourage putting at least a couple of these spots on your itinerary to Seoul. Planning to head to Korea after this pandemic is over but find yourself befuddled by the culture and language? Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. People travel for many reasons; from the desire to learn more about a culture, expanding their knowledge on gastronomy or classifying themselves as an avid traveler. Whatever the reason may be, the first thing one should do before traveling is to do a thorough research on the destination prior to visiting. This is important as to abide by the basic etiquette followed by the locals to avoid getting odd stares or worse come to worst, going viral on social media for the wrong reasons! So you’re planning on traveling to Korea for the first time but is unfamiliar with the culture, food and K-pop scene? Let us provide you with the best things to do and look out for when visiting Korea for first-timers. Language One tip before visiting Korea is to learn some basic Korean. Though some may be intimidated by the idea, the Korean language is as easy as A-B-C. Whether you are a hardcore K-pop fan or just want to immerse in the Korean culture, the Korean alphabet, Hangul is the simplest way to grasp the language. We recommend picking up important questions like where is the toilet and how much is…? Transportation is efficient & affordable One may not know this but getting around in Korea is affordable and easily accessible thanks to its efficient public transportation system. The extensive public transportation makes it convenient for travelers to travel from province to province, city to countryside as the network includes railways, bus routes, ferry services and highways. Getting a T-Money card allows one to use public buses to get from one city to the next without going through the hassle of a single journey ticket. Tipping is not mandatory To put it simply, the tipping culture is not practiced in Korea. Koreans are hospitable people in general and they will go above and beyond to make you feel right at home especially when it comes to eating. Thank them at the end of the meal before you leave the restaurant with a “ kamsahamnida ” which translates to “thank you” and that would suffice. Café culture The café culture in Korea is a prominent scene as it is very much centered on the culture’s social life. A few reasons cafes are often visited is due to the lack of space and privacy at home. Unlike the rest of the world, cafes in Korea not only refer to a coffee shop selling pastries and coffee but also those selling a variety of Korean pastries, bingsu – flavored shaved ice of your choice with fresh fruit and aesthetically pleasing desserts that will intrigue. Street food galore Food lovers describe Korean food as spicy, flavorful and diverse. Korean food has been well-loved by people from around the world with kimchi as the most prominent staple. The Korean food in general has so much to offer ranging from the famous Korean fried chicken, Korean barbecue to a plethora of street food. From foods on a skewer, stews to sweet and savory pancakes called hotteok , one will be spoilt for choice! How much Soju is too much Soju? Soju can be ordered in almost every restaurant in Korea, specifically ones that offer Korean barbecue and street food. This colorless distilled alcoholic drink which can sometimes be disguised as water is often enjoyed in its natural form or mixed with other alcohols like beer. With a variety of flavors to choose from; it is no wonder this drink is appreciated by Koreans and even movie stars like Ryan Reynolds! Avoid black cabs If you do plan to use cabs to get around in the city, beware of which ones you flag down as the black cabs are known as Korea’s “premium taxis”. These black cabs tend to charge more than the average silver/orange taxis and by the end of the ride, one will be billed a large amount. Therefore to avoid this occurrence, stay alert and be on the lookout…or just take the trains ☺ Respect It is noticeable that in the Asian culture respecting your elders is demonstrated through language and gestures. The Korean culture is no different in the sense, when sitting at the table with the elders present, anyone younger is obliged to fill the glass of their elders. Additionally, they are also to turn away from their elders when taking a sip of their beverage and hold it with both hands. Howbeit, this tradition may not be practiced by each individual today as it depends on the preference of the elders. ~~~ We hope that this will give you a little insight to the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of the local culture and practices when traveling to Korea once the borders have opened up for international travel. Remember to stay safe as Sedunia Travel in collaboration with Korea Tourism Organisation is ready to assist you with your future travel plans! For more information on the Korea packages they offer, please visit their website at www.sedunia.com.my or call us at 03-21420222 and one of their well-versed travel consultants will be able to help with any questions or queries you may have.
