All Our Travel Tales & Tips

The notion of glamping isn’t a new one but some Malaysians still have a hard time embracing the concept. It is mostly like due to our unpredictable weather, ever friendly mosquitos, and the common misperception that it’s outright uncomfortable. Firstly, let’s clear the air on what is glamping. The term itself is derived from the words ‘glamourous’ and ‘camping’. Think nature meets modern comfort. Even nay-sayers of traditional camping have taken to glamping as it allows them to enjoy the great outdoors without having to give up their essential comforts. Most glamping sites in Malaysia are equipped with wifi and aircon as well breakfast. Some accommodation may offer full board meals and activities onsite so that you will never see the need to leave the place. Of course, as these glamping sites are often integrated into its natural surroundings, it’s important to check if the glamping site is suitably accessible for your needs. Depending also on which option you book, your accommodation may or may not come with an ensuite bathroom. Most of the time when you go camping, a staple diet would be instant noodles or if you’re really hardworking, a hard-earned barbeque over a campfire which often requires bringing your own ingredients and starting the fire. But when it comes to glamping, your dining experiences will fall along the lines of picnics baskets and a candlelight dinner prepared by the resort. Glamping resorts like Tiarasa Escapes have their own onsite café, The Rasa Tea Salon which serves as a dining room, reception and communal lounge. Guests can mingle there while enjoying a cup of locally sourced tea and traditional dishes. Of course, you can always opt to drive out to explore the surrounding towns and kampong for an exciting experience with the locals. Glamping not only reconnects you with nature but also with the people that lives in unison with it. For those with young children, the experience will enrich their childhood memories whilst also teaching them to appreciate the great outdoors and their existing comforts. You can always check if your glamping sites are also kid-friendly with kid-specific activities and games such as with Tiarasa Escapes. reposted: @wafflenessa Take advantage of some of the attractions surrounding these eco-friendly resorts with guided tours to see the best of what they have to offer. For instance, a stay at Sungai Lembing Time Capsule can be accompanied with a guided tour to the Rainbow Water in a 4 x 4 truck. While you can venture to the waterfall by yourself, a local guide would be able to advice you best on the timing, maneuvering the terrain and if the weather was permitting. Now let’s talk about one of the most crucial part of glamping – the quality of sleep you will be getting. Gone are those roll up beds that lets you feel every pebble, stick, grass and creepy crawling under you and your tent. Glamping takes that best parts of camping and gives you a comfortable rest in at the end of the day. Imagine falling asleep under the Milky Way to the sounds of water flowing through the creek and nature singing in your comfortable plush bed with pillows and a comforter. Lost World of Tambun, Ipoh has beautiful floating chalets that sits on the lake under the stars. Surrounding by ample space in Mother Nature and fresh air all around, glamping is the ideal means of escaping the congestion of the city. With many looking for more isolated getaways and sustainable travel, why not give glamping a try? You might find yourself liking it. If you're ever in Chinatown Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Street, you will surely notice Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown, just a short walk from the LRT, MRT and bus stations. For those looking for a hotel to escape to for the weekend without venturing too far out, this might just be the getaway you need. Just at the foot of the hotel is a plethora of cafes and bars just waiting to be explored all day. The ever Instagrammable Kwai Chai Hong lane is just a stone's throwaway from the Four Points' entrance as is the Ho Kow kopitiam that often garners a crowd of local visitors early in the morning. The aesthetics of Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown was the first thing I noticed as soon as I arrived at the main entrance on the ground floor. The decor perfectly blended modern colours of gold, blue and green with the oriental touch of Chinatown. The standard SOPs (temperature and mySejahtera app scanning) are done at ground floor before I headed up to the 7th floor to the lobby for check in. Keeping up with the oriental theme, the lobby and even the restaurant, bar and hotel rooms are beautiful done up with touches of local cultural designs and even historical photographs depicting olden day Chinatown. Natural lighting spilled in from the ceiling-to-floor windows of the lobby, lighting up the warm brick walls and vibrant colours of its sofas. If you want to take photos in the lobby to spruce up your Instagram, you can start from the moment you check in. Going a step further, Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown has installed glass panels as a protective buffer between the staff and the guests during this ongoing pandemic. Everything in the hotel was redesigned to minimise contact such as just dropping off the card keys in a box upon checkout and contacting the staff via an app. Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown also features Jann bar, well known for its locally inspired cocktails and view of KL tower, Quan's Kitchen restaurant on the 8th floor and Lady Yi's Tea House at the lobby. For fitness junkies, there is a swimming pool and a gym that is not without an oriental touch as well. Similarly a wallpaper artwork created by Malaysian artist Loka Made featuring an artwork of Chinatown greeted me in my hotel room, right above my comfy king size bed. The room I got had the view of the national mosque and the old KTM train station. There was just something about watching the trains go by and the standstill traffic build-up while I just relaxed the evening away before venturing out to look for dinner. If you prefer, you can try asking for a view of the KL Towers instead. Sleep was blissful thanks to the wonderfully plush bed with its many pillows and comfy blanket. I swung by the gym in the morning for a quick workout before my growling stomach demanded I seek out breakfast at the kopitiams nearby. I spent the morning walking around Chinatown to catch a glimpse of Petaling Street on a quiet Friday morning. The great thing about staying at the hotel right smack in the middle of Chinatown was that I got to explore the area for some street photos and head back for a quick shower before check out. My entire stay at Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown was perfectly relaxing - the best way to sate my travel itch without having to travel too far out. I am sorely tempted to book another stay at the hotel just so I can enjoy a late night cap at Jann and at the bespoke bars in the area without having to worry about coming home tipsy. Jann also has happy hour from 4pm to 9pm while Quan's Kitchen has a reasonable customisable Nourish meal with one main dish and three side dishes or desserts at only RM33. For those driving into town, Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown has its own parking floors at RM2 per hour while stay-in guests gets a fixed rate of RM10. Street parking was also available (depending on your luck) but if you're like me and want to skip the stress of traffic, just take the MRT or LRT.  All in all, I would say Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown is great for a short staycation for those looking to explore Kwai Chai Hong lane, its many cafes and bars as well as Petaling Street. Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown offers a great start point to seeing what Chinatown has for locals. Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown Address: 2 Jalan Balai Polis, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Be still my heart - heaven on earth has arrived in the form of Lindt Home of Chocolate that just opened its doors in Zurichon 13 Sept 2020. While we can't travel internationally yet, no harm marking this down on the must-visit list for the future. The Lindt Home of Chocolate takes guests on a journey with an interactive museum bringing them through “seven chocolate worlds.” From cultivation to production, the cocoa bean that gifts the world with chocolate is the star of the story. The exhibits will also teach visitors about the history of Swiss chocolate making, teaching them not only about Lindt, but also about its famous predecessors. The Home of Chocolate also features several other attractions to keep chocolate lovers busy. At the Lindt Chocolateria, for example, guests can create their own tasty confections during a chocolate-making class, while the research facility allows an inside look at the Lindt production process. The Praline Tasting Room is also a must, and a Lindt cafe is available to cleanse the palate and refuel for more exploring. Of course, guests can bring home chocolaty treats as presents or to eat for themselves - we don't judge as the building also houses the world’s largest Lindt chocolate shop. While the maze of white, milk, and dark chocolates is impressive, the Lindt Home of Chocolate also boasts another record: the world’s largest chocolate fountain. Standing at about 30 ft. tall, this show-stopping fountain beats out the previous record holder by just a few feet. It’s also the centerpiece greeting guests at the entrance, setting the tone for the chocolaty experience ahead. The Lindt & Sprüngli factory has sat in Kilchberg, Zurich since 1899. The Lindt Home of Chocolate — a project seven years in the making — was designed to perfectly complement that historic building and serve as a beacon to chocolate lovers everywhere. As a reminder, make sure to always emphasize on social and physical distancing in compliance to the standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent any transmission of this COVID-19 virus outbreak. Experiencing local communities is one of the greatest joys of travel; whether it be through indigenous flavours, traditional architecture or art. During times of uncertainty, it often falls to the artists to help make sense of the new reality. Whilst narrating their individual, personal experiences in a way that gets a grip on the viewer, artists also tell the story of the entire community. Avani Hotels’ travel series is focused on art-centred travel stories from Thailand and Cambodia where creatives have been experimenting with different media to express themselves in this new reality. An Artist’s Village a Hop and a Skip from Avani+ Hua Hin Resort For most travellers Hua Hin is synonymous with lounging on the beach and nature walks. For those willing to venture farther afield, however, Hua Hin offers a uniquely local experience – a visit to the Baan Sillapin Artists Village. The Artists Village features coffee shops, workshops and studios that also operate as art galleries, with artists showcasing their creative process as well as selling the finished pieces with all proceeds going towards supporting arts in the village. Located just a few minutes’ drive from Avani+ Hua Hin Resort , the art community hosts over 15 studios ranging from woodcarving, clay sculpture, jewellery making and antiques to photography, watercolour, oil paintings and contemporary art. Painting Trash Bins for Charity with Avani+ Samui When picturing the many leisure activities available to a vacationer on Thailand’s Koh Samui island, painting trash bins rarely, if ever, comes to mind. And yet, this is exactly what the island’s long-time resident Donna Reiss encourages Avani+ Samui Resort ’s guest to do to help save the planet. Bubbly and personable, Donna invites the budding artists to her beachfront residence before presenting them with a pot of paint and some brushes. She then kicks off a creative session where an oversized trash bin is given a new lease of life. Glowing with a new coat of paint, the bins are distributed through the local hospitality network to public areas and beaches around the island. The goal is to prevent trash from ending up in the ocean, thus helping to preserve marine life and the environment. Joining the Artistic Tribe with FCC Angkor by Avani If a traveller were to Google ‘Tribe Cambodia’, they would find Tribe Urban Art Gallery under ‘coffee shop’ category, and rightly so. Yet many visitors who drop by for a cup of freshly brewed espresso stay for Tribe’s impressive collection of contemporary art by established and emerging Khmer artists. Located around the corner from FCC Angkor by Avani , Tribe is on a mission to educate as well as providing a platform for Khmer artists to share their stories with the world.
