All Our Travel Tales & Tips

The Ramadhan season is truly a time to look forward to for the plethora of buka puasa dinners to be enjoyed by not only our Muslim friends but also Malaysians from all walks of life. This year, The RuMa Hotel and Residences invites guests on a culinary journey at SANTAI through its wide spread of traditional Malay cuisine. A step through the doors of the hotel was like walking into someone's home with decors that spoke of a personal touch. Similarly as you make your way up to Level 6 where SANTAI sits beside the pool, it will feel as though you were welcomed into your doting rich auntie's humble abode. Lovers of Malay cuisine will enjoy the traditional touches to the buffet spread this year with highlight on the more unique and oft-overlooked aspects of traditional Malay cuisine, featuring an expansive assortment of aromatic ulam, piquant kerabu, punchy jeruk and crunchy keropok. Chef Mohammad Rizuwan, Chef de Cuisine of Production Kitchen at The RuMa Hotel and Residences, draws from the flavours of his childhood as he recalls the experiences that have shaped his palate and culinary abilities. “Ramadhan is a time for connection with all that we hold dear: our values, our community, our family and our roots,” he shares. “I learned to cook from my mother and to me, the festive season will always bring back the flavours of ulam-ulaman kampung—herbs like pucuk paku, daun selom and jantung pisang grown in our own backyard that my mother and I would pick and prepare for buka. These traditional preparations will always take me back to my childhood—a reminder of the importance of family and of sharing during this special time.” To start, I beelined it for the lemang and rendang and found the pulut hitam lemang to be the winner between the two lemang types. The rendang was good, pairing well with the coconut flavour of the lemang. Next was the Sup Perut Lembu Berempah, a dish spoke of warmth and the comfort with each sip. It could have used a sprinkle of spicy though. Of course, it was hard to ignore the centerpiece of nasi kabsa with a slab of juicy lamb hanging over it. The nasi was aromatic with a generous portion of cashew nuts and raisins. My recommendation is to try the nasi with the lamb first to enjoy the moistness of the meat with the rich flavours of the rice before piling on the gravy items for round two. One unassuming dish that stood out for me from the first bite was the Sayur Lodeh. Rich with santan with a hint of smokiness amidst the fern (I think), it was a good combo to eat with anything. If grilled is more your thing, then head on over to the Warung Pak Bakar corner. Here you can have your pick of Satay Ayam, Ayam Bakar Madu Merah, Slipper Lobster Percik, Udang Bakar, Siakap Bakar or Salmon Bakar. Apart from that, there are many other dishes laid out such as the herbaceous daun pegaga and raja ulam paired with a smorgasbord of sambals; to an assortment of kerabu such as mangga sotong, taugeh kerang and jantung pisang guaranteed to take you down memory lane. Alongside these favourites are modern iterations of Malay classics, from salmon bakar and slipper lobster percik, to durian strudel and pandan crème brûlée to finish on a sweet note. Ramadhan Buffet 28 March – 20 April 2023, 630pm Price: RM218 Nett per person Offer: Get 20% off if you booked before 31 March 2023, dine in from 28 March - 16 April 2023) Reservation: two days in advance, no walk-ins. Eid Al-Fitr Delicacies 13 March 2023 – 20 April 2023 Ramadhan is a time for reflection and for sharing, and what better way to connect with friends and family than by sending them a well-presented box of sweet treats. Let loved ones know you are thinking of them with kuih bunga dahlia, symbolising kindness and beauty; peanut cookies as a wish for longevity and good health; pandan sable to symbolise care and affection; or chocolate chip cookies for a lovely and cheerful life. Each box of cookies comes with a selection of three kinds of dates as well as a packet of elegant sampul raya. These festive delicacies are priced at MYR128 per box. Italian cuisine lovers here will soon be able to source Roberto’s homemade pastas, sauces and a number of authentic Italian food items and ingredients to cook in their own homes from Roberto’s Pronto, an Italian deli store under PETRA Lifestyle which is set to be operational from early next year. The deli, located in Ara Damansara, will also stock a variety of cheeses, cold cuts, olive oil, meats etc, and also serve Roberto’s famous pizzas as part of the takeaway menu to cater to surrounding neighbourhoods. Customers will be able to order pizzas via food delivery applications. PETRA Lifestyle President Roberto Guiati said, “Our vision for Roberto’s Pronto is to emulate a typical neighbourhood grocery store that you can find in an Italian village. We want to offer authentic Italian food ingredients and fresh Roberto’s pizza to Ara Damansara and Subang areas.” The plans were unveiled during the second anniversary celebration of Roberto’s 1020 Osteria at Bangsar Shopping Centre today. “Apart from the deli store, our central kitchen will also be operational in view of the expansion plans that we have for the Roberto’s and Luce restaurants. The central kitchen will allow our F&B group to maintain the high quality and standards of the food served at our restaurants in a more cost-effective way,” he said. Meanwhile, PETRA Group Chairman and Chief Executive Datuk (Dr) Vinod Sekhar said Roberto’s 2nd year anniversary is a milestone as it proved that with tenacity and hard work, it can sustain and come this far. “We started this venture when Malaysia and the rest of the world were in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. While other businesses were closing down, we saw an opportunity in F&B to create something special that would go beyond the pandemic. This journey has taught us perseverance, and it has also showed that we are capable of establishing a successful, unique, authentic Italian restaurant brand in Malaysia and take it around the globe from here,” he said. “Our determination to forge ahead despite the challenging times, creating employment and revenue opportunities, stimulate the economy and lift people up with us while doing so, is the reason we are here,” added Datuk Vinod.

We know that travel can be about more than just discovering new places but discovering more about your faith. Join us on a Globus or Cosmos religious tour where we incorporate fellowship and fun across the globe, starting with a walk through Spain as part of the Camino de Santiago. Even if you aren’t religious, visiting the historical significance of many of the places included on on this tour with us is an incredible experience. The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. The most popular route (which gets very crowded in mid-summer) is the Camino Francés which stretches 780 km (nearly 500 miles) from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port near Biarritz in France to Santiago. This route is fed by three major French routes: the Voie de Tours, the Voie de Vezelay, and the Voie du Puy . It is also joined along its route by the Camino Aragones (which is fed by the Voie d’Arles which crosses the Pyrenees at the Somport Pass), by the Camí de Sant Jaume from Montserrat near Barcelona, the Ruta de Tunel from Irun, the Camino Primitivo from Bilbao and Oviedo, and by the Camino de Levante from Valencia and Toledo. Walking the Camino Walking the Camino is not difficult – most of the stages are fairly flat on good paths. The main difficulty is that few of us have walked continuously for 10, 20 or 30 days. You learn more about your feet than you would ever have thought possible! Origins of the pilgrimage The history of the Camino de Santiago goes back to the 9th Century, when the tomb of the evangelical apostle St. James was discovered in what is today Santiago de Compostela. Since then, pilgrims from all over the world have walked St. James' Way, originally seeking forgiveness for their sins, and nowadays often just to spend time on a journey of personal growth. This is a challenging experience as it involves a significant physical effort as you walk through forests and along busy roads for many miles each day for a total of approximately 71 miles. The Way was defined then by the net of Roman routes that joined the neuralgic points of the Peninsula. The impressive human flow that from very soon went towards Galicia made quickly appear lots of hospitals, churches, monasteries, abbeys and towns around the route. During the 14th century the pilgrimage began to decay, fact brought by the wars, the epidemics and the natural catastrophes. The recovery of the route begins at the end of the 19th century, but it is during the last quarter of the 20th century when the authentic contemporary resurge of the peregrination takes place. There is no doubt that the social, tourist, cultural or sport components have had a great importance in the “jacobea” revitalization but we cannot forget that the route has gained its prestige thanks to its spiritual value. Santiago de Compostela, Spain Marked as the final stop along the Camino de Santiago walk, Santiago de Compostela is – without a doubt – one of the most inspirational places in Spain. Choose to attend mass and watch the priest welcome the pilgrims who have arrived that day; explore the old quarter, filled with elegant architecture around every corner; or simply indulge in local specialties while reflecting on what a special place this is. Your rewards will be intangible, but priceless: an opportunity to enjoy nature, meditate, search for answers, and challenge your limits, discover beautiful rural areas of northern Spain, and make friends with whom you’ll have shared one of the most significant experiences of your life. At the end of your journey, relax on an excursion by coach to Finisterre and Muxia and a guided tour of Santiago de Compostela. You will receive the Compostela Certificate upon completion of the entire route on foot.  Yearly, hundreds of thousands of people of various backgrounds walk the Camino de Santiago either on their own or in organized groups. People who want to have peace of mind will benefit from an organized tour or a self-guided tour which can be booked via Sedunia Travel. No matter if you’re religious or not, we hope you will come away feeling rejuvenated and renewed after one of our Globus or Cosmos faith-based coach tours. Finding Faith in the Camino - a Walking Journey for the Soul

Move aside, quokkas. I have found my new favourite animal in Australia and it’s called the echidna. Never mind the fact I almost stepped on one while on the Sanctuary tour at the Wildlife Retreat Taronga Zoo. It was a thrill watching the two rescued echidnas scurrying across the Sanctuary from the N’Gurra lounge balcony after we had checked in at the Wildlife Retreat. Our Animal View room faced the aviary section of the Taronga Zoo and in the morning, we were greeted by the chirps and songs of the colourful birds roused for their breakfast feeding. Guests can also opt for rooms facing the Sanctuary and might be able to glimpse the resident koalas right outside their windows. Staying at the Wildlife Retreat allowed us unlimited entry into Taronga Zoo on the arrival day or check out day. That way, we could explore the zoo, return to the retreat for our complimentary Sanctuary tour or to rest in the room and resume the zoo adventure later on or before we checked out. We stored our luggage at the lobby making it super convenient for us. The resort is designed around its Sanctuary, allowing guests a chance to get up close and personal with some of its rescues and resident animals on a guided afternoon tour. The animals were free roaming which resulted in me almost backtracking into a curious echidna who wanted to sniff my boots. Fortunately for me, it was a mild-mannered creature with spikes similar to a hedgehog but with larger feet armed with claws. We were informed that it was one of the four mammals that laid eggs in Australia. We also got to meet the resident bettongs, pademelons and wallabies amidst the well-designed habitat nestled amongst the lodges and walkways. Taronga Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world that are non-profit and focuses on conservation and education. In fact, every stay at the Wildlife Retreat supports their conservation programs in Australia and globally. Dinner was spent at the award-winning Me-Gal Restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended upon check-in especially if you want the tables with a view of the Opera House and the city skyline at night. Guests have the option of two course or three course meals. After ordering our two course meals, the waiter brought us warm bread and salted butter to kick things off. This was quickly followed by our starters, the Sydney Rock Oysters, half dozen locally sourced oysters which were satisfyingly refreshing and the slow Cooked Beef Cheek with sweet potato puree, watercress salad and walnuts. Keeping to our surf and turf theme, our mains were wild Caught Barramundi and the Grilled NSW Beef Tenderloin. The freshness was evident in the ingredients, all locally sourced by the restaurant on a seasonal basis. The beef could have used some extra seasoning to enhance the richness of the meat but then again that could just be the Asian in me who likes her flavours strong. Personally the seafood truly shone that evening. For those travelling with kids, the restaurant was also armed with a kid's menu and high kid chairs. Our breakfast was also at Me-Gal and was served buffet style. While minimal in offering, the quality of the food was great especially the sausages and salad. They also had a pastry island with bread, croissant and puff pastry. Here's where I shall impart something I learnt - warm up the croissant in their moving toaster oven, slater it with nutella or butter while warm and be rewarded with the best breakfast treat ever. Then come back to this article and thank me later. Check out was a reluctant process and we stalled leaving our room right up to the last minute to enjoy the room amenities. Our king size bed was very comfortable and for those with many electronics to charge, the room has an abundance of plug points and USB points. At the 10am check out, we left our luggage at the reception for safekeeping before we made a beeline for the zoo again to spend the rest of the morning there. As we were early and the weekend crowd had yet to arrive, we could explore the place in relative ease. Perks of staying right next door to the zoo, am I right? A stay over at the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga includes: a 2-day entry into the Zoo, complimentary car parking, buffet breakfast at Me-Gal, a guided tour of The Sanctuary, Free luggage storage before check in and after check out. Japan is expected to waive visa requirements for certain tourists and remove a limit on daily arrivals in October as it aims to benefit from a rebound in global tourism, Nikkei reported on Thursday. Following the change, Japan will not require visas for short-term travelers from listed countries, and will scrap the daily entry cap of 50,000 people, the media outlet said. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to announce the changes in the coming days, the report said. With the yen languishing near a 24-year low against the dollar, the Japanese government could benefit from capitalizing on the increased buying power of tourists by easing travel requirements. Japan last week raised the daily ceiling of inbound travelers to 50,000 from 20,000, and eliminated a requirement for pre-departure COVID tests, easing what have been among the most restrictive border measures among major economies. Before the pandemic, Japan did not require tourist visas for 68 countries and regions. When borders have opened to free independent travellers, be sure to check out Sedunia Travel for unique off the beaten path experiences in Japan.
