All Our Travel Tales & Tips

During these times when travel has come to a standstill, there is nowhere to turn to but look forward for the adventures that awaits us at the end of this tunnel. Just like how a cruise experience like no other awaits you onboard Celestyal Cruises. Just close your eyes and let us walk through what is waiting for you onboard their biggest ship in their fleet, Celestyal Olympia. But don't worry about sharing space onboard with thousands of other people as Celestyal Olympia is actually a mid-sized vessel, acommodating just over a 1,000 people. Its size allows it to venture to destinations that bigger cruise ships cannot reach. Onboard you will find an authentic Italian vibe, an array of social spaces and non-stop onboard entertainment. Your Home Away From Home There are 724 staterooms onboard Celestyal Olympia, with a total of 418 outside staterooms and 306 inside staterooms. No matter whether you choose an interior or exterior stateroom, your room will come equipped with a private bathroom, a telephone, a hairdryer, a TV, a safety deposit box, air conditioning, wardrobes, bedside tables and a vanity table with a stool and mirror. All of the cabins are a generous size, and nine of the suites have a private balcony. Tip: Book well in advance to avoid disappointment for the balcony suites as those sell out very fast. There are two accessible staterooms on the ship, both of which are outside cabins with handrail systems and plenty of space to maneuver a wheelchair. Should you require further assistance to make your trip all the more memorable, don't hesitate to let your travel agent know so that the dedicated housekeeping staff and stateroom stewards of Celestyal Cruises can make it happen. In addition to keeping your room clean, making the beds and changing the towels, their cabin staff are also known for leaving wonderful surprises for you to find in your stateroom, such as candy and cute towel animals. Isn't that a nice touch?! Activities From Day to Night Activities start in the morning and continue all day, right through to the evening. There’s always something to do for everyone, such as dance classes, bingo, arts and crafts sessions, quizzes, demonstrations and even language lessons. A daily program is delivered directly to your stateroom each night so that you know exactly what’s happening the following day and to help you to plan out your day in advance. Not only does their activities keep you occupied whilst you sail to each destination, the activities are also a great way for you to meet fellow guests and spend time with your travel companions. Visit the pool deck for a swim or head to the fully-equipped gym so that you can keep in shape while you cruise. The Olympia also has a modern spa and beauty center, perfect for pampering yourself with a manicure, haircut or professional spa treatment. There are three outlets across the city making LockCha Tea House an accessible dining option. Address: Ground Floor, The K.S. Lo Gallery, Hong Kong Park, Admiralty, Hong Kong. In addition, each item is prepared by chefs specially trained to handle halal food. In case you're unsure of what to order, here are some recommendations: Chicken siu mai, Steamed shrimp dumplings ( har kow ), Steamed rice noodle roll ( cheung fun ) and Red bean pau Do take note however that this eatery is reserved for Muslims only from Friday to Sunday, and Public Holidays. Owned by a Hong Kong-born Muslim, the cafe’s bakery section uses peanut oil and vegetable oil in its pastries, allowing you to rest easy as you munch on their pineapple buns and flaky egg tarts. That being said, only the bakery section is Halal-certified so we would suggest getting your snacks to-go with a side of Hong Kong milk tea. What comes to mind when we say Hong Kong? Dimsum, cafes, The Peak, Disneyland and shopping are probably at the forefront of many's mind to answer that question. Without a doubt Hong Kong is a popular choice for those activities as its vicinity to Malaysia makes it ideal for a short or long getaway and its growing Muslim community continues to draw and encourage Muslim travellers to explore this vibrant country. But setting aside the usual activities that first-timers to Hong Kong would do, there are some things you never knew that you could do in Hong Kong. 1. See pink dolphins up close In the lieu of this pandemic and a lack of water traffic, Hong Kong's pink dolphins have returned to the waters between Hong Kong and Macau. The rugged southern coastline of Hong Kong's outlying Lantau island provides shelter from typhoons and predators for these endangered species of dolphins. Efforts are being made now to preserve these rare and beautiful creatures before developments eventually drives them into extinction. The best way to see them is joining a boat trip from Tai O or the ever popular Hong Kong Pink Dolphin Watch Cruise from Tung Chung. 2. Explore the Hong Kong UNESCO Global GeoPark Officially named the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark , this conservation area is dedicated to Hong Kong’s unique geological formations and comprises two main regions: the volcanic rock region in Sai Kung and the sedimentary rock region in the Northeast New Territories. Take advantage of the free tours of the different Geopark sites to explore islands, sea caves and abandoned fishing villages that aren't often ventured to by the everyday tourist. Another great place to start is the Volcano Discovery Centre, which can be found at the Sai Kung Waterfront Park. 3. Dine at one of many Michelin Star Restaurants Set aside your cravings for dim sum and splurge a bit more at one of the many Michelin Star restaurants dotted across Hong Kong. Hong Kong's award winning restaurants are no strangers to the scene and have maintained their status if not improved each year. In 2021 alone, there are 69 Michelin star restaurants in Hong Kong, offering French, Italian, Japanese to local cuisine. So you can rest assured that you will definitely be dining well. We recommend trying out Kam's Roast Goose for that traditional cantonese style roast goose and the farm-to-table restaurant, Roganic for a green dining experience that has been dubbed as superior by critics. 4. Sipping on the local Wine When it comes to winemaking, you couldn't think of Hong Kong. But you will be for a surprise and a treat to learn that Hong Kong has four locally made wines under the label The Urban Project by Eddie McDougall. One of them, Sampan, was awarded first runner-up in the Old World Red Wine Below HK$100 category in this year’s Restaurant & Bar Hong Kong House Wine Awards. 5. Immerse Yourselves in the Arts Over the past few years, the art scene has really taken off in Hong Kong and there are lots of beautiful pieces scattered around the city such as Soho, a neighborhood just above the CBD, and Wan Chai. You can easily spend an afternoon walking around and stumbling upon funky and colorful street art. Hong Kong also hosts several arts exhibitions and events throughout the city. This year, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has rolled out the ‘ Arts in Hong Kong ’ campaign to help audiences reconnect with art and the vitality of Hong Kong, whether here in person or abroad. From May to June alone, there are 10 exhibitions and events running which you can learn more about here . 6. Visit Noah's Ark Where else in the world can you find a giant model of Noah’s Ark celebrating one of the Bible’s most famous stories? Measuring some 450 feet, the full-size simulation can be found in an evangelical Christian theme park on Ma Wan Island and features sculptures of 67 pairs of animals emerging from the Ark. Quirky on the outside, it’s even more surprising on the inside where you’ll find a fully operational hotel and youth hostel, as well as a full multimedia experience. Even if you don't stay the night here, visiting the world's biggest replica of the legendary ark is something you can only do in Hong Kong. 7. Rent a private Yacht to wine and dine abroad Is it really summer in Hong Kong if you aren't spending your weekends lounging on the bow of a superyacht? No, we didn't think so. From live orchestras to five-star catering and on-board jacuzzis, you can live the high life even if it's just for a few hours on the waters of Hong Kong, away from the crowd. 8. Explore Mr Monopoly's Residence Step aside Mickey Mouse because Mr Monopoly is moving in. Behold the world’s first-ever Monopoly-themed attraction in Hong Kong. Located on The Peak – a must-visit destination in itself – Monopoly Dreams™ invites you to Mr Monopoly’s home city and secret residence, where you’ll find holograms and 4DX technology designed from the classic board game. You’ll also be able to find limited-edition Monopoly sets and souvenirs and enjoy delicious snacks.
 9. 100km Walk at MacLehose Trail Did you know that you can embark on a 100km walk along the MacLehose Trail? Stretching from East to West, the crown jewel of Hong Kong's hiking trails connects six country parks, from hills to shorelines. Brace yourself for a breathtaking adventure as the MacLehose Trail takes you into some of the most pristine landscapes of Kowloon and the New Territories. But if you prefer to be on wheels, then our next activity is just for you. 10. 60km Cycle Through New Territories See the different parts of the New Territories on bike via a 60km cycling track. The track stretches from Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan, and snakes through numerous neighbourhoods that are well worth exploring including Yuen Long, Tai Po, and Sha Tin. This route offers a combination of refreshing seaside views along with lush greenery, offering respite for those who wish to get away from the bustling city. If you have Hong Kong plans for the future, then why not start looking into packages with Sedunia Travel ? Their experienced consultants are able to help you with your arrangements to itinerary planning, accommodation and travel arrangement and day trips. Contact them at contact@sedunia.com.my.

No other K-pop band has taken over the entire world the same way BTS aka the Bangtan Boys has. But despite their international fame, BTS continues to make efforts to introduce their Korean roots in simple yet effective ways. In the past, they filmed a music video at Gyeongbokgung Palace while dressed in hanbok, and even appeared on an NBC talk show wearing hanbok. In Korea, they visited many lesser known places, creating a wonderful tour course for BTS fans looking to follow in their footsteps. Korea House You may recognise this place from the cover of the BTS edition of the Billboard magazine. Indeed, the magazine shoot for the cover as well as individual photos of the band was taken here at the Nogeumjeong Pavilion at Korea House. Aside from being the shoot location for BTS, Korea House offers visitors exposure to all types of Korean cultures from traditional food to the arts and even traditional wedding ceremonies. You can try a royal table d'hote, watch traditional performances and join inthe cultural programmes. Jumunjin beach Jumunjin beach became famous thanks to that one iconic scenes in the popular kdrama series, Goblin but did you know that it is also famous for another reason? Just along the road by the beach is a bus stop that was built especially for a BTS shoot. This spot is a must visit for all fans of BTS and Goblin for photos! And while you're there, why not enjoy a day by the beach on a hot summer day? Gyeongbokgung Palace Gyeongbokgung Palace is a recommended spot for any visitot to Korea but to the BTS fans, it's a must to visit. Geunjeongjeon Hall was registered as National Treasure No. 223 Their performance was made even more spectacular thanks to the use of hundreds of drones. The pavilion appears to float atop the pond around it. It is especially popular in spring, when the weeping cherry trees around the pond are in bloom.
Awon Museum & Hotel Awon Museum & Hotel was a filming location of the 2019 BTS Summer Package. In the film, the members of BTS also visited nearby attractions like Soyang Oseongje House and Uibongsanseong Fortress , quickly raising their popularity. The house itself was originally built in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, but was moved to the current location within Wanju Oseong Hanok Village. Despite the move, the 250-year-old house still maintains the dignity of a scholar’s lifestyle from the Joseon era. Korea Furniture Museum This spot is a celebrity magnet having seen the likes of Brad Pitt, Martha Steward and of course, BTS. Image courtesy of Szabotage Home to towering skyscrapers and bustling metropolitan streets, it’s easy to assume that Hong Kong is just another sterile city. Yet take a moment to look beyond these urban tropes, and you’ll soon see why you couldn’t be more wrong. Make no mistake, there is more to Hong Kong than meets the eye. Case in point – along with being Asia’s financial capital, did you know that Hong Kong plays host to one of the region’s most vibrant art hubs? From world-class galleries and exhibitions, to dedicated Art Months, the creative spirit is well and truly alive here. And nowhere is this more evident than on the streets. From the “east-meets-west” inspired murals found in busy Central, to the urban graffiti in industrial Wong Chuk Hang, and colourful hipster delights of Sham Shui Po, street art is transforming the cityscape with bold expressions of artistry. Local and international artists alike have taken to using urban surfaces, big and small, as their canvas. Ahead, we chat to three such artists to learn more about their street art murals, as well as their favourite Hong Kong neighbourhoods for art and inspiration. Image courtesy of Elsa Jean de Dieu Elsa Jean de Dieu Hong Kong-based French artist Elsa Jean de Dieu has been painting her way through Asia since 2008, leaving her mark with beautifully unique wall murals in Hong Kong, Shanghai and beyond. One of her most beloved works can be found on Soho’s Peel Street, a popular nightlife destination brimming with international cuisine options for the city’s thriving expat population. Image courtesy of Elsa Jean de Dieu What was the inspiration behind this piece? The owners of Brazilian-Japanese street food restaurant, Uma Nota, Laura & Alexis Offe, were looking for an artist to create a joyful mural that combined the cultures of both countries. When they approached me, it didn’t take long for me to get completely hooked on the concept and to create something aligned with their vision. I was very much inspired by our discussion, and I came back to them with this Brazilian lady full of energy and joy, painted with lots of vivid colours. The pink colour of the facade alludes to Japanese sakura flowers, and I also included flying gingko leaves to link the main artwork on the facade to the inside of the restaurant. Image courtesy of Elsa Jean de Dieu What has been the public reaction to your piece? At first I wasn’t sure if a mural painted by a foreigner would be accepted by the local neighbourhood, but I realised very quickly that people instantly connected with the artwork, and many were so happy to talk to me and take selfies in front of the mural while I was painting. I believe artwork can create a spontaneous connection beyond our cultural differences, and that’s the reason why I decided to keep spreading happiness and positive vibes through my art by painting as many smiling faces as possible throughout the city! What is your favourite street or neighbourhood for street art in Hong Kong? I love Soho – it’s very easy to spot different artworks just by taking the escalators. I’m also a fan of Sheung Wan and all the streets adjacent to Hollywood Road because it reminds me of the Marais in Paris, with all the cafes and super trendy artsy shops. Artlane in Sai Ying Pun also offers wonderful artworks made by various talented artists. Image courtesy of Carol Mui and Rebecca T Lin Carol Mui & Rebecca T Lin “Creative hustlers” Carol Mui and Rebecca T Lin look to the beauty of nature for their greenery-filled murals. These two friends started their mural business in 2017 to help offices, restaurants and shops transform their walls with art, and have since worked with clients like DBS, Lululemon and Pizza Express. Uniquely balancing dreamy streetscapes with luscious depictions of plantlife, the duo’s signature style is anchored in Carol’s philosophy of “slowing down”, whilst drawing on Hong Kong-born Rebecca’s dedication to home and heritage. Their piece at landmark revitalisation project, The Mills (now a cultural, experiential and retail hub), brings Mother Nature to the location’s industrial landscape. Image courtesy of Carol Mui and Rebecca T Lin What was the inspiration behind this piece? Becca: On my site visit, I noticed how the new development warped harmoniously around the preserved structures, which links with the collaborative theme within our previous murals of contrasting cityscapes layered with overgrown nature. I took inspiration from the architecture, specifically the notorious green pillars, and incorporated our signature greenery into what looks like a paradox between a thriving environment and an abandoned work place to evoke feelings of sentimentality – ultimately highlighting the history and heritage of the building. What was the process of painting this mural like? Carol: It was an interesting experience painting in Tsuen Wan; my mum grew up there, so it was nice exploring her childhood jaunts on our breaks – like trying her favourite noodles in the Heung Che Street Market. It’s great that some of these places are still around. There was also a really sweet moment when a stranger passing by gave us two cold drinks he bought from 7-11 because it was such a hot and sunny day. What has been the public reaction to your piece? Becca: We’re honestly surprised by how popular this one has been - we didn’t expect this mural to be the background of so many Tinder profile photos! It’s always flattering when a piece is well received, and interesting seeing how different our piece can look depending on what filter was used. Where in Hong Kong do you like to go for inspiration? Carol: There’s a lot of plants and botanicals in our work, and Hong Kong is the perfect place to go hiking and get lost in the mountains for some inspiration. Becca lives in Sai Kung, and I used to live on Lamma Island, so nature was literally on our respective doorsteps. It’s also fun going to the Prince Edward Flower Market to look for special, seasonal or rare plants we wouldn’t find while hiking - we’re both obsessed with house plants (surprise, surprise!), so it doubles as a fun shopping day - although both of us are running out of space for plants at home… Image courtesy of Carol Mui and Rebecca T Lin Image courtesy of Szabotage Szabotage Known for his old-school graffiti aesthetic and onstage antics, British-born contemporary urban artist and designer Szabotage uses his street art to capture the essence of the city, fusing inspiration from both the east and west to create something uniquely “Hong Kong”. Having been commissioned by the likes of Louis Vuitton, Pret A Manger, Ritz Carlton and more, his pieces are popular as much for their bright colours and popular cultural references, as they are for Szabotage’s exploration of the relationship between urban architecture and their communities. Proving that culture isn’t a solely cosmopolitan affair, his iconic panther mural is set against the backdrop of a quiet residential village in the Hong Kong countryside. Image courtesy of Szabotage What was the inspiration behind this piece? I first painted a large mural of a lobster on the wall of my house, as the area is called Lobster Bay. This had amazing feedback from our local community, and subsequently led to a request from my neighbours that I paint their wall. This provided the opportunity for a second large scale mural in the village, and that’s how the Village Cat came about. The inspiration behind this mural is about the family and their interests, including their appreciation of cats. I added sporty elements to tie in with their love of all things active, including a stencil of the family paddle boarding together. The addition of the butterflies pays homage to the wonderful wildlife that surrounds us in Clearwater Bay. Image courtesy of Szabotage What was the process of painting this mural like? During the painting process, many of the villagers stopped to chat to me. The satisfying part about creating a mural on the street is the ability to interact with people whilst you’re painting, and getting immediate reactions and responses to your work. I remember an instance when a young girl came and chatted to me. She then went home and painted a picture for me. I was really chuffed that she had felt inspired. If my artwork encourages people to draw more, then that’s a huge achievement for me. Works like the Village Cat pay homage to Hong Kong, so it means a lot when people here appreciate what I’m creating. It’s also inspiring when people outside of the Hong Kong community, with no personal connection to the piece, appreciate the artwork too. Image courtesy of Szabotage What is your favourite street or neighbourhood for street art in Hong Kong? Sai Ying Pun has to be one of my favourite spots for street art in Hong Kong. With a mix of old Hong Kong and new developments, there’s a real variety of street art styles and pieces. A number of streets around Sai Ying Pun have been transformed into a multi-coloured canvas, with vibrant murals by both local and international artists. Galleries have also exhibited street artists, and there’s a real international feel, with famous artists leaving their mark here when passing through Hong Kong. Sai Ying Pun is also home to many of my notorious Koi Fish tags. Some have even been added to by other artists, with one even painting cats alongside for a cheeky touch of humour. Gorgeous, eclectic Sydney — a destination replete with stunning beaches, award-winning restaurants and bars and a world-class arts and culture scene. From generation to generation, the capital of New South Wales has been a family favourite for good reason, with its relative close proximity to Malaysia, no language barrier, and a plethora of activities that get reinvented every year. Whether it’s staying in a hip boutique hotel like the Ovolo Woolloomooloo or Paramount House Hotel with your too-cool teenagers; a sophisticated heritage property like The Fullerton Hotel Sydney or QT Sydney for multi-generational travellers; or a range of serviced apartment options, the city provides a wide range of accommodation no matter the size and style of your family. A well-connected public transport system and readily available car rentals also make transport a breeze. Now that the basics are covered, here are six reasons why Sydney should be your next family holiday. 1. Stunning walking tracks with breath-taking views: A short yet fulfilling walking trail for the whole family to take on is the Bondi to Coogee walk, which spans an easy 6km and features scenic views like quaint rock pools, beaches, parks and cliffs. This track is also perfect for whale watching during the months between May and November. Travellers can also take on segments of the Bondi to Manly track that passes through some of the city’s most spectacular coastal and Harbourside suburbs. The 80km walking track is both breath-taking and rich in Indigenous heritage, taking between 4 to 7 days to complete. Highlights of the itinerary include the Hermitage Foreshore Walk, one of Sydney’s most beautiful coastal walks, and Reef Beach, which is home to an Ancestral reburial site and Aboriginal rock art. 2. The best nooks and crannies to shop for unique artisanal treasures Darlinghurst’s Foley Street is a must-see for travellers looking for sustainable, locally-made keepsakes evocative of their time in Sydney for years to come. A prime example is Studio Enti, a ceramic shop selling elegant yet sturdy porcelain tableware and accessories made with local materials like Australian porcelain – a joy for adults to explore. Teens can also take a quick trip to Spunky Bruiser for unique and eclectic fashion that’s sure to turn their friends green with envy.
 3. Unforgettable road trips out of the city Road trips are a quintessential family holiday experience, especially when travelling with young children. Sydney is surrounded by several amazing regional destinations that are conveniently located less than a couple hours drive away. For a good dose of nature, the Blue Mountains is a short 90 minutes by car – perfect for those planning a quick day trip out of the city. The Greater Blue Mountains is a World Heritage-listed area recognised for its unique plants, wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Soak up Indigenous history as you head to Echo Point to revel in its sights, or bask in vibrant flora and fauna in the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden. Alternatively, a road trip along the famed would be a great option for more adventurous travellers to take on. The first stop on the coastal drive from Sydney to Kiama is at the Royal National Park – here you can take a hike to Little Marley Beach for some scenic sea views. When you reach Kiama, don’t forget to stop and check out the Kiama Blowhole, the largest blowhole in the world! From Kiama, follow the route to spectacular Jervis Bay and go dolphin spotting on a cruise, before continuing to Narooma for an unforgettable swim with seals off Montague Island.
 4. Amazing nature and wildlife encounters Witnessing the beauty of Australia’s native wildlife has to be one of the most memorable highlights of any trip to Sydney. Stay at the elegant Taronga Zoo Wildlife Retreat overlooking the sensational Sydney Harbour with your young ones, and be surrounded by Australian flora and fauna. You can even book one of the Animal View rooms, and wake up to koalas and wildlife roaming right outside your window. The retreat experience also offers animal tours and complimentary access to the zoo. Take a trip down under and appreciate Sydney’s marine ecosystem at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. The aquarium has plenty of immersive zones to keep children entertained like the Penguin Expedition, Shark Walk & Shark Valley and Dugong Island – where kids will be able to get up close and personal with adorable animals such as Pig the dugong and Dave, Chong and Myrtle, the aquarium’s sweet sea turtles.
If you’re keen to go further, you’ll find that Regional NSW has so much to offer. Let the kids experience horse and pony rides down in Glenworth Valley, where you can also stop for a one-night camping trip under the stars. If you have more adventurous children in tow, take them on an ATV ride across towering sand dunes in Port Stephens –– you can even surf some sand waves and do a little sandboarding, who says you need snow?
 5. Family-friendly cafés and Instagrammable hot spots Sydney is an Instagrammer’s haven with its slew of aesthetic cafés and hot spots, perfect to liven up any teen’s Instagram feed. After all as the saying goes – pics or it didn’t happen. Our top pick is The Grounds of Alexandria, a leafy green haven built into a heritage-listed factory with aesthetics as on point as their food. For families with young children, the café even has a farm animal experience where they can pat and feed adorable goats and pigs. Black Star Pastry is another to add to the list – try its famously vibrant Strawberry Watermelon cake, which is also one of the world’s most Instagrammed sweet treats. If you’re feeling a little whimsical, drop by Speedos Café along Bondi Beach. This treasure of a café was voted ‘The Most Instagrammable Café’ in the world by travel magazine Big Seven Travel, and it’s easy to see why with its collection of rainbow dessert offerings that’s sure to be the highlight of your feed for a long time. Adventurous Instagrammers can also venture out of the CBD to check out The Boathouse located on Sydney’s beautiful Balmoral Beach or Baby Coffee Co in Waterloo complete with pastel pink interiors and rainbow desserts – yum! Aside from food, you should definitely take a trip down to the Hornby Lighthouse, an iconic lighthouse with vertical red stripes that will make a gram-worthy backdrop for your #OOTDs, and don’t forget to check out Bronte Bath Viewpoint for that majestic view of the coastline.
 6. Scenic family farm stays and fruit picking activities For a tech-free getaway that immerses you in the best of Sydney’s countryside, we recommend taking a couple nights of refuge from the city in some of the most scenic family farm stays the region has to offer. Take a quick 90 minutes drive down to Picton NSW and make yourself at home at Mowbray Park Farmstay. They host a myriad of activities like horseback riding, bush dances, boomerang throwing, feeding cattle, milking cows and collecting eggs. Insider tip –– this farm stay even hosts a Kids Club so tired parents can finally take that much needed respite. Image credit: Dee Kramer Photography Get your kids interested in incorporating vibrant fruits in their diet when you go fruit picking at some of Sydney’s best orchards. Depending on the time of year, you can have the opportunity to pick a vast selection of fruits ranging from apples, oranges and pears to peaches, nectarines, persimmons, limes and lemons. We recommend heading down to Glenbernie Orchard, just an hour away from Sydney, where kids can pick buckets of apples at The Apple Shack while adults sip on the orchard’s very own cider selection and honey mead.

A lot of us Malaysians might be familiar with sea cruising with the luxury of cruises from Penang and even Port Klang ready to take us places in a pre-Covid era. But perhaps when travel resume, consider river cruising instead for a change of pace and perspective. Rivers are the flowing veins of the earth, from the mighty Amazon and Nile to the Rhine and Danube, with human, animal and plant life lining their banks. When the olden days travelers follow these waterways, they are looking for an intimate connection with the destination and a floating home to return to after a day of exploration. To the uninitiated traveller, choosing a river cruise can be daunting. In Europe alone, more than two dozen companies offer extended river cruises. But here are a few things to consider when choosing your river route. 1. What do you want to experience? Hikes, wine, tulips in spring, fine dining, historical landmarks, alternative dining venues, step-out balconies, French balconies, dual balconies, king-sized beds, butler service – and the list goes on. Some river cruise companies specialises in a certain area of interest such as bringing the fine dining experience to its guests throughout the cruise. But others like Avalon Waterways offer two or more options of excursions depending on your interests. This gives you the flexibility to mix and match between various activities throughout the trip - something beneficial for those with varied interests or is travelling in pairs or as a group. 2. Where Do You Want To River Cruise? Closely tied in to the first question, the next part is listing down where you want to travel around. Rhine and the Danube are popular choices for first timer river cruises - especially the latter. Why? Aside from its picturesque views on the water, sailing on the Danube features a list of marquee cities – Nuremberg, Passau, Linz, Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava (as well as Bucharest and Belgrade on some itineraries) and it offers something for everyone. But if you want to see more, some river cruise companies also have cruises that cut across various waterways such as the Rhine, Moselle and Main . 3. What is Your Budget? Next, decide how much you are willing to budget for your river cruise. Some river cruise companies are all-inclusive to ensure you get a hassle-free experience without having to worry about your meals, daily expenses and gratuities. But what if you could do without that 24/7 booze or prefer to opt for a cheaper excursion? It's hard to pin a price to the experience you want so remember that pricing is a moving target. But of course, you can always save a little more and even snag great deals when you book your river cruise in advance with an authorised travel agent such as Sedunia Travel , the official GSA for Avalon Waterways. 4. When do you want to go? Finally, when do you want to cruise? Do you want to see tulips in bloom? Christmas Markets? Grape harvest? Fall foliage? Avoid the crowds? Avoid the heat? One final caveat about cruising Europe's rivers: Aside from special Christmas market and New Year cruises, the season typically runs from April to October. Be aware that heavy rain and spring flooding can make the rivers swell and the locks become impassable. (Many are under bridges, so if the water is too high, boats can't fit underneath.) Always check with your local travel agent on a recommended period as they would be able to provide you with experience and information. 5. Finally, how many people are cruising with you? If you're a solo traveller, you may have to deal with the dreaded single supplement where you end up paying the same price as two pax to a cabin. But some companies like Avalon Waterways occasionally waiver or reduce the single supplement when you book in advance. Another thing to factor in is how many people are onboard the ship. In a post-Covid world, we foresee that less is better which is why small-ship cruises will be more popular and higher in demand. More and more travellers will be willing to pay for that extra bit of space and privacy. Maybe being a solo traveller wouldn't be so bad after all. Hopefully, these five questions will help you come closer to matching you to the perfect destination on a ship that suits your style. Of course, you can always get in touch with Sedunia Travel for a sure fire shortcut to getting your river cruising plans rolling in 2022! Sources: Cruise Critic, River Cruise Advisor
