There’s just something about Egypt that brings out the explorer in all of us be it as Lara Croft or Brendan Fraser’s Rick O'Connell from the original Mummy trilogy. Egypt in all essence is a mystical old-world wonder. Mysterious. beautiful and terribly misunderstood in recent years. But of course, with highly anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at the end of 2020, Egypt will make its comeback to the top of many travellers’ list once more. As the largest Archaeological museum in the world, the GEM will be home to the largest collection of a single civilization’s artifacts in the world and is at the edge of the first desert plateau between the Pyramids at Giza and the city of Cairo. Over 100,000 objects including 30,000 that has never been displayed before will be put on display in the impressive 5.2 million square foot museum. Amongst some of the most highly anticipated displays is the entire 5,000-piece funerary collection of King Tutankhamun, including his sandals, chariot, and cheetah-skin shield – the first time in history that the full collection will be on display. While no date has been set yet of its grand opening (at time of writing), insider media tours have driven the hype amongst travellers, putting Egypt back in the limelight. But even as we wait with bated breath for the GEM’s official opening, Egypt has so much more to offer in and about its cities from its ancient pyramids to its sandy tombs, endless deserts that hide many secrets of the past, friendly locals, mouth-watering cuisine and life-giving River Nile. Exciting Adventure of Ancient History and Culture Enriched with a history that intrigues many scholars and archaeologists, Egypt’s capital city, Cairo is a hustle and bustle of towering buildings, renowned schools and mosques – many of which boasting some of the best architecture of medieval Islam times. At the same time, this nation has also seamlessly integrated Christianity into its culture and history with the church’s liturgical language and the traditional calendar that links back to the era of the pharaohs. Visitors and explorers will be able to see these influences in Cairo’s ancient churches and remote desert monasteries. Sailing through the Sands of Time Taking a step out to its oceans of sands, Egypt’s vast deserts are perpetually fascinating especially when it clashes against the coastline of the Red Sea. Night outs in the desert would often reward travellers with melting sunsets, starry nights and beautiful sunrises in the morning. Enjoy a camel ride along the mesmerising shapes of the White Desert or bask in the horizon of the comfort of the hot spring in Siwa Oasis. Experience the River Life And then there is the River Nile, the source of ancient life for Egyptians. As the old saying goes, Egypt is the gift of the Nile and indeed it is as today, the Nile continues to hold a significant role in the lives of the people. A cruise along the Nile will take you to the Luxor Temple and the twin temples at Kom Ombo, devoted to the crocodile god Sobek-Ra and the falcon god Horus. A visit to the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens will put you in the presence of the untouched tomb of King Tut, found with undisturbed riches and wealth befitting of a pharaoh. With so many iconic monuments of Egypt easily accessible by the river, it’s no wonder why a Nile cruise remains a popular way to travel for many visitors. The Best way to see Egypt Given its popularity amongst visitors, there are many river cruise options around and picking a suitable river cruise can perplexing for first-timers. Most Nile cruises will travel between Luxor and Aswan and make stops at key attractions along the way. For the best experience, it’s recommended to spend at least 5 days and 4 nights on the cruise for a more enriching experience that doesn’t feel rushed. For first-timers to Egypt and the Nile Cruise, we recommend engaging an all in-tour like Avalon Waterways’ The Taste of Egypt itinerary to give you the best experience of Egypt. The Taste of Egypt with Avalon Waterways Avalon last offered Egyptian cruises in 2016 and is back with more cohesive itineraries that caters to new and veteran travellers of mysterious Egypt. In March 2006, the Reef Dive Resort at Mataking Island sank an old cargo ship as part of its conservation programme. This created an artificial reef which boosted the tropical reef life and provided a home for marine creatures in the clear tropical waters around the resort. A mail box was placed on the front of the wheel house of this shipwreck. Reef Dive Resort is the only resort in Mataking and offers guests a luxurious and exciting stay, blending top notch accommodation and underwater explorations. AirAsia guests can now take unlimited* flights for a year with the AirAsia Unlimited Pass at only RM499 nett, available for purchase on airasia.com/deals or AirAsia mobile app for seven days only starting today. AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail said, “this is unprecedented. However, AirAsia has always been known as the disruptor and we want to restore traveller’s confidence amid the current sentiment towards flying. Travelling is still very safe as long as everyone travels responsibly and is kept updated by World Health Organisation (WHO) or respective government’s travel advice. “As the travel period spans across one full year, AirAsia Unlimited Pass holders can decide when best to travel and choose between exploring all available destinations or keep going back to the same favourite location over and over again in different seasons, the choice is yours!” added Ben. According to a press release on IATA’s website , passengers should be reassured that cabin air is filtered, that aircraft are cleaned in line with global standards, that key airports have implemented temperature screening for travellers and that airline staff and crew are trained to deal with the rare case of a passenger presenting with symptoms of infection. The WHO has not called for restrictions on travel or trade. Indeed, air transport plays a major role—bringing medical staff and supplies to where they are needed. “If you are sick, don’t travel. If you have flu-like symptoms, wear a mask and see a doctor. And when you travel wash your hands frequently and don’t touch your face. Observing these simple measures should keep flying safe for all,” said Dr. David Powell, IATA’s Medical Advisor. AirAsia Unlimited Pass is available to all Malaysia-based AirAsia BIG members on airasia.com/deals or mobile app from 29 February 2020 (1200hrs Local Time) to 7 March 2020 (2359hrs Local Time) only . If you've been to Japan, then you would be familiar with this household name: Ichiran Ramen. This famous ramen franchise needs no introductions for its delicious tonkotsu ramen, ticketing machines and individual sitting booths. Source: Sugoi Days This writer is personally such a huge fan of Ichiran Ramen that she even visited the manufacturing factory in Itoshima to see how it's prepared, packed and shipped out to the rest of the country. She also hunted down two unique Ichiran bowl designs in Fukuoka: the pentagon-shaped bowl of ramen only found at Ichiran Dazaifu Sando and the bento bowl at Tenjin and Canal City outlets. Whilst in Nagasaki, she ate Ichiran ramen five times over the course of a week. Source: Sugoi Days And for her to hear that Ichiran Ramen is making an appearance in Kuala Lumpur is akin to Chris Evans coming to Malaysia. That's right, from 13 to 22 March 2020, the ramen chain will be having its own little pop-up in Isetan KLCC for the first time ever. Not much information has been shared about this yet but from what we have gathered from other media sources, here are a few things to consider: It will be a 100% tonkotsu-free version, mostly like to mean without pork marrow or bone in the soup. It will feature their famous individual seating booths for an authentic Ichiran experience. Much like its outlets in Japan, queues are to be expected. Source: Emile Guillemot on Unsplash It remains unknown for now if they will be bringing over their iconic ticketing machine for a truly authentic experience or if they will be selling any of their merchandise or instant noodles. We will be following this closely (and will mostly be in line for it as well) and will report back when we have more info.

Beach lovers, mark your calendars because Thailand's most iconic beach Maya Bay in Koh Phi Phi will finally be opening its doors(?, docks?) once more by November 2020. Maya Bay has been closed to tourists since June 2018 as ordered by the Department for National Marine Park of Thai due to concerns of mass tourism on the bay's environment. The area is undergoing an revitalisation effort which includes a US$200,000 wooden pier and mooring at Maya Bay’s back entrance for speedboats and long-tail boats. The new pier is expected to accommodate a maximum of eight boats at a time, with the number of boats being able to stop each day to be limited. An elevated boardwalk, a designated walkway for tourists, will allow access to Loh Samah Bay and onto a viewing platform at Ao Maya.In future, tourists won’t enter the bay by boat and they won’t walk on the beach. Check back here for more updates on Maya Bay but it won't hurt to start planning for a Phukut holiday in December.
