All Our Travel Tales & Tips

It was happy landings in Boston for 72-year old Mina Velloo Kuttie and her service dog, Patch who left from Kuala Lumpur, after enduring a 24-hour flight to the United States.  Mina who was headed to Boston to meet her son, had initially placed Patch in a kennel as she prepared for her first flying experience with the dog. Much to her pleasant surprise, the ground personnel of Qatar Airways told her at the check-in counter that Patch was welcomed onboard the passenger cabin to fly for free. “I did not expect that Patch would be treated so well by the airline staff. Even the passengers were so welcoming, ” she said when contacted by the Star newspaper in Massachusetts where her son Muthu Kumar Veerapen works as a geneticist in the general hospital. According to Muthu Kumar, his mother’s therapist felt that it would be a good idea to have Patch accompany her for emotional support. Patch has been playing a role as emotional and support dog to his mother since his father died some years ago. “I checked and found that the airline allowed for a service animal onboard provided that the necessary documents were submitted, ” he said, adding that a letter from the therapist, Patch’s passport as well as its vaccination record were submitted to the airline. “We were initially not sure if Patch would be able to fly in the cabin and had a kennel fitted for her. It turned out that Qatar Airways took this seriously, especially because my mother was flying all the way to the US where support animals are given serious regard.”  Muthu Kumar added that Patch, which weighs 12kg, was well-behaved during the flight. “People on the plane commented on how human-like she is, ” he said. A Qatar Airways representative has confirmed that Patch, a mixed-breed, was the first service dog to fly in-cabin out of Kuala Lumpur onboard its flight. Kudos to Qatar Airways! Now who’s a good doggo?!   This story was first spotted in the Star.

written by Ilona Chin Travelling is one of the best rewards you can give yourself as you go to places where you feel like you’re in paradise. In the age of digital, using a travel agent may sound like going the way of the dinosaurs. Smartphones have made it so easy to book a holiday with a quick few clicks on an app. However, there is just too much travel deals on the digital platform. Planning for a short getaway can sometimes become a nightmare. Travel agents have insights that you can’t get online and help get some of the best deals, sometimes not available online. If anything goes wrong, they can step in and offer you a solution. We summed up six fantastic reasons why you should always book with a professional travel agent. Travel agents save you time! There is a difference between travel inspiration and actual travel desires. Destinations may look good on adverts but may not actually be ideal for you personally. There is no do-over for a vacation gone wrong. Your time is valuable and you shouldn’t have to spend it searching for the right vacation. A travel agent can do that for you. Travel agents can help you achieve the vacation you desire because they listen, understand, suggest, and adjust. Not just a search engine or an anonymous voice. “They do the work, you pack and go!” It’s nice to deal with a real human! Travel agents treat you like a person, not a booking number. They want to make sure that you have a good trip, and nothing makes an agent happier than hearing from clients when they return from their fabulous holiday and knowing that they helped them. Because of this, travel agents are with you every step of your trip, before, during and after, triple checking that your reservations are correct before you depart, on-hand to make sure that everything goes well, and afterwards in the case of any hiccups. Travel agents are experts in their field Should you head to Europe in May or October? Is it better to travel to Vietnam from South to North, or vice versa? Travel agents know which hotel rooms have the best view, what entry visas and pass requirements you need for which country. They can recommend an interesting destination you’ve never considered, which ship excursions you should do, and they can give you a chance to get off the beaten track and see something that’s uniquely important to you. Travel agents save you money & add value The best travel agents have unique access to benefits will save you a lot of money and provide you with a better overall experience. There are also hidden savings built into trips. A travel agent will likely book transfers for you, included in the price. From exclusive or priority access to attractions, added amenities, are just a few of the things that agents can get, that you can’t. Add in hard-to-get restaurant reservations, and you will have a lot more value for the same travel expenses. Sometimes a package that you book yourself won’t include those, making the experience appear cheaper. Travel agents have insider networks! Travel agents usually develop a network of relationships with suppliers and local travel operators and have access to a variety of tools where the average consumer is not able to use or doesn’t know about. They leverage these relationships to give you the best travel experience. Some of these inventories, tours and experiences are only available exclusively through a travel agent. They can sometimes get you event tickets, and plan activities for you. They also have exclusive entrée to experiences you might not know are available to you. Travel is becoming more difficult due to natural disasters Travel has been particularly tricky lately with natural disasters, strikes and extreme weather affecting many destinations. When disaster strikes, it’s easy to panic and difficult to sit on hold to try and rebook flights or cancel hotels. Travel agents not only have the insider information to react quickly to travel interruptions but they can also act as your advocate and help to change travel dates or find alternative accommodation and try to get your vacation back on track. Getting a travel agent to do all the hassle before you leave for your holiday really takes the burden off you, especially if you’re travelling in a group. Nope, we’re not talking about that fizzy orange drink that goes by the same name. Think beautiful lady in a glittering red dress with red lipstick to match in arm with a man in a sharp sleek suit with a rose in mouth dancing to the sensual rhythm of staccato Latin music. The titillating and tantalizing tango is popular across many ballroom halls and competitions, but did you know that this dance originates from the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina? Written by Arththi Sathananthar
Image credit: Cancilleria Although today tango is seen as an art form practiced and appraised by the rich and sophisticated, its origins shed a different story. Tango’s roots are closely tied to the rich oral culture from African slaves in Argentina . The word itself, tango, was used to refer to African music and dance events organized by the slaves.
Image credit: North Wind Picture Archives In the 1800s, Buenos Aires was a melting pot of cultures. Argentina had abolished slavery in 1853 and its capital experienced an influx of Spanish, Italian, Polish, British and Russian immigrants. All these different communities intermingled with each other and the native Argentinians and Africans, thus they shared their various music and dance styles to birth the tango. It was the compraditos , young men, poor, native born of mixed ancestry, who embraced the dance form and spread it across the city. Image credit: Lonely Planet However, the dance was performed in the seediest parts of the city in the poorest barrios (neighbourhoods). Tango was commonly found in brothels and the dance told a story of a prostitute and pimp acting out. Tango was seen as a form of rebellion against ‘proper’ society, a way to express the under-goings of the underbelly of Buenos Aires. With the accompaniment of the bandoneon , an accordion type instrument, it became synonymous with the dance. The bandoneon added to the melancholic feel of the dance, making it a sentimental and serious artform that expressed the struggles of the underclass. Image credit: Blog Patagonia So how did tango find its way to the crème de la crème of Argentine society? Wealthy young playboys would frequent these barrios and they brought the tango with them to conventillos : parties that took place in large houses which had large halls for noble families to dance. Therefore, by the beginning of the twentieth century, tango was seen as a national emblem and had spread not only throughout Buenos Aires but to provincial towns and even to neighbouring Uruguay. Image credit: Youtube Having been established as a reputable dance, tango then spread to Europe. Paris is believed to be ground zero of tango’s widespread fame in Europe and then the rest of the world. Once again, these Argentine playboys would frequent bohemian parties held by each nation’s elite to introduce this risqué dance. The world loved it and by the 1910s tango found its way to Paris, London and New York. The true golden age of the tango was seen during the 1930s and the 1950s. People worldwide saw tango on the silver screen as well as the proliferation of tango records to listen to at home. No longer was tango performed in seedy bars but in well-reputed places such as milongas (tango dance halls). Today the tango is listed as one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage and there are 8 types of tango that reflect the diverse cultures from the globe that have added its own flare to the Argentine tango. Image credit: KingGoya When in Buenos Aires, you can catch this dramatic and sensual dance on the streets of Calle Florida or Boca. If you prefer a sit-down show, then the San Telmo or Microcentro districts have plenty of dinner + dance combos for you to spend a romantic evening. If you want a front row seat to watch this spectacular performance or wish to have a charming Argentine pull you in for a dance, take a look at our tours to Buenos Aires >>

Written by Ilona, Photos provided by Qatar Tourism Aspiring to make  Qatar  the cultural capital of the Middle East, the country has taken on the artistic route by bringing art into the public realm to explore a broader audience around the streets of Doha to the local creative scene. To persuade local talents to establish an organic connection in art, the local community array various forms of skill in the public area with a range of public art installations by leading international artists around the country. Here we showcase some of the most imposing Public Arts around Qatar; it’s simply amazing! Souq Waqif – Le Pouce by César Baldaccini Marking the most significant success in Qatar’s history, Qatar Museums revealed that a new public art piece by a recognized French artist César Baldaccini. This historic heart of the city with a bit of modern history, blending the traditional with the contemporary. Le Pouce, in the shape of a gigantic thumb, is one of its creator’s signature pieces. It becomes the latest addition to Qatar’s large-scale public art collection, aims to connect public crowds in Qatar with inspiring works of art through unexpected interactions in daily life. Hamad International Airport – Lamp Bear by Urs Fischer This giant bronze sculpture by Swiss artist Urs Fischer was auctioned off at Christie for $6.8 million takes centre stage and welcomes passengers in the departures terminal of Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar. It is a 23-foot canary yellow teddy bear carved from bronze blissfully sit inside a lamp in the grand foyer leading to HIA’s world-class duty-free hall. It enlightens the space around it and recalls travellers of precious objects from home.
MIA Park – The ‘7’ Sculpture by Richard Serra American artist Richard Serra designed the ‘7’ Sculpture features a looming 80-feet tower by the pier of MIA Park (a crescent-shaped promenade). It was unveiled in 2011, the towering piece overlooking the Doha bay and embracing the surrounding greenery of MIA Park. The number seven has spiritual significance in Islamic tradition, Serra pays tribute in this sculpture and built from seven steel plates. Inspired by a minaret in Afghanistan, this is the tallest art piece ever made by Richard Serra and his first installation in the Middle East. It made from 7 steel plates, each 78 feet high and 8 feet wide and arranged in a seven-sided shape. Desert of Brouq – East-West/West-East by Richard Serra Located in one of the most remote areas in Qatar, this imposing East-West/West-East installation spans over a kilometre and comprises four steel plates in the Brouq Nature Reserve. Each over fourteen metres in height. To pledge perfect alignment, Richard Serra examined the topography of the land and appealingly enhanced the vast, bleak space in the heart of the desert. The result is spectacular and timeless, and the American sculptor has called this sculpture his most fulfilling piece.
Salwa Road Tunnel – Calligraffiti by El Seed Photo credited to  Public Art (QMA)  on  https://www.flickr.com/
In  Arab culture,  calligraphy has a rich history, and you can often see the beautiful writing adorning jewellery, buildings, or as simple words phrases. When you take it to the street and painting walls, then you get Calligraffiti as French-Tunisian artist El Seed calls his work. Fifty-two large murals blending Arabic calligraphy with the Western art of graffiti, El Seed’s graffiti art is in recognizable feature for anyone travelling along one of the buzzing roads in Qatar. Each mural inspired by an aspect of life in Qatar, it becomes one of the city’s most distinguished example of public art.  National Convention Centre – Maman by Louise Bourgeois This giant spider sculpture sits in Qatar’s National Convention Centre – a stunning home that makes it all the more striking. It stops visitors in their tracks, allowing them to encounter art in an everyday setting. Louise Bourgeois captures a fragile moment, where a protective mother carries her eggs through marble, bronze, and stainless steel reveals the beauty in an initially intimidating object. The powerful art piece called Maman, meaning “mama” or “mommy” in French. Louise Bourgeois explores the meaning of motherhood and alludes to the strength of her mother, whom she lost at the age of twenty-one. Sidra Medical Centre – The Miraculous Journey by Damien Hirst The Miraculous Journey is a set of staggering figures of a baby growing in a uterus. This installation is situated at Sidra Medical Centre speaks the beauty of an extraordinary human process special dedicated to women and children, the venue and pieces empower each other. The outrageous installation is a series of fourteen sculptures, charting the progress of a new life in a uterus, adding a set of twins, and ending with a 45-foot-high model of a new-born baby boy. The first “nude” sculpture in the  Middle East , even if it is merely a baby. Katara Cultural Village – Gandhi’s Three Monkeys by Subodh Gupta A collection of three sculptures showing heads wearing military gear.  Each piece made out of kitchen utensils, old pails, traditional Indian lunch boxes and glass bowls. There are three soldiers’ heads wearing different headgear. “See no evil” head wears goggles, “hear no evil” head wears a balaclava hood, and “speak no evil” head wears a gas mask. Located amid Katara, Doha’s vibrant cultural village, this installation captures people’s attention by tackling the bold theme of war and peace in a domestic setting.
Aspire Park – Perceval by Sarah Lucas Photo credited to mira66 on  https://www.flickr.com/
Adored by children who play in the Aspire Park, Perceval is a bronze sculpture of a shire horse leading a cart containing giant marrows which is the artist’s only famous piece of public art and homage to British culture. That is the unique touch of Sarah Lucas, creating something that would be ordinary in one part of the world but stands out as something unique in another. Lifelike and looking very out of place for the region, this one is a local favourite, probably because it is built to scale and makes a nice switch from the more ordinary found camels.  Calling Art aficionado, make sure you visit these nine eye-catching Public Art Pieces in Qatar on your next vacation.
